Location History
The Old Hamilton County Jail was constructed in 1893 in Jasper, Florida and by the time the last inmate was transferred and the old cells slammed shut forever in 1984, it was the oldest operating jail in the state. For 91 years, the quaint structure with its looming tower was a purveyor of justice for those in Hamilton County.
The jail’s benign appearance is a façade that hides the tragedy and despair that the walls witnessed throughout the duration of its operation. Perhaps that is why the local folklore insists upon the hauntings that draw paranormal investigators from all over the world to validate the tales.
It is a debated fact whether or not hangings took place within the jail but a dangling nooseless rope still protrudes from the ceiling as a pointed reminder that inmates who did face execution by hanging spent their final days at the Old Hamilton County Jail counting down the last minutes of their lives. Such angst and desperation are bound to leave an imprint upon the brick walls of the structure.
Displayed inside the jail is a notice of execution that appeared in the Tallahassee Democrat in 1916. Rather than using the prisoner’s name it refers to him as “the murderer of Deputy Raiford Royals” and the “black man.” Walter Durham had been convicted of the murder and because of the nature of the crime, his death was made into a public affair. The local people gathered on the lawn of the jail around the gallows that had been constructed and watched as Durham swung to his death.
Executions are not the only deaths that occurred at the Old Hamilton County Jail. Among the collected stories of past inmates is the reported suicide of a female prisoner in the women’s cells. Perhaps it is her restless spirit that people have seen wandering the cell block in the darkness of night.
And yet, with darkness there is also light. The Deputy Sheriff and his family resided on site and his wife gave birth to both of their sons inside the building. The sounds of children laughing and playing is often reported by paranormal investigators that dare to spend the night inside the Old Hamilton County Jail.
